Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why should I go through an accelerated program rather than a traditional flight training program?

A: Strangely enough, most people have a life outside of aviation. More often than not, that life interferes with a student's flight training. The distractions of work and family can quite often cause a student to cancel flights or put off training. Under these conditions the training process can drag on for months or even years! This gets quite expensive, and frustrating. Many students become disenchanted with the whole process and quit. By setting aside 2 weeks of your time, and getting away from the distractions of every day life, your chances of success are significantly improved.

Q: Why should I choose Skyraider Aviation for my training?

A: Skyraider Aviation specializes in Sport Pilot training. While we can (and occasionally do) offer Private and Instrument training, our focus is entirely on Sport Pilots. We were one of the first companies in the US to offer training for the Sport Pilot certificate. And unlike your local flight school... we are huge proponents of the Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft program! We're not going to lure you in with the promise of low cost Sport Pilot training, and then try to convince you to switch over to a more expensive Private Pilot training program.

Q: What are your instructors like?

A: Our instructors have widely varied backgrounds. They have experience in everything from ultralights, to gliders, to military aircraft, to the airlines. The one thing they all have in common is a passion for flying and for passing that passion on to other would-be pilots.

Q: What are the requirements to get a Sport Pilot license?

A: To become a Sport Pilot, you'll need to get a minimum of 15 hours of dual flight time (with an instructor), and 5 hours of solo flight time (by yourself). Additionally, you have to pass an FAA written test, and an FAA practical (flying) test.

Q: Your program includes 25 hours of flight time. What if after 25 hours, I'm still not ready to take my FAA practical test?

A: Of course we cannot guarantee that everyone who attends our program will reach the level of competency required to pass the FAA flight test, but under the expert tutelage of our experienced staff, your chances for success are excellent! Still... everyone learns at a different pace. Some students may require more than 25 hours of flight training, and will therefore incur some additional costs. There is enough flexibility built into our program to allow for more training (at an additional cost) should that be required.

Q: What about the weather?

A: While the Denver metro area enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine per year, weather may occasionally cause the cancellation of a scheduled flight. We've planned our program to allow for some weather delays.

Q: What will a typical training day be like?

A: On most days you'll fly twice. Once in the morning, and again after a 2 to 4 hour break. Each flying session will last about 2 hours including pre and post flight briefings. The time between flights will be dedicated to both guided and self study.

Q: Is there any prior experience required?

A: We require everyone who attends our program to have completed an approved Sport Pilot ground school or home study course. You should show up on the first day of class with either your written test completed, or at least be ready to take your written test. No prior flight experience is required.

Q: Besides the $3,500, what other expenses are there?

A: You'll have to pay for lodging and transportation. Additionally, you'll have to pay any testing fees you might incur. Most students will come to us having completed the written test. And if you choose to use an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) instead of an FAA examiner, you will typically be charged a testing fee of approximately $350 by the DPE.

Q: I've heard "density altitude" is an issue in Colorado. What's up with that?

A: As altitude increases, aircraft performance decreases. Our airport is located at 5,130 feet above sea level, which is higher than many pilots will ever fly! Additionally, as air temperature increases, your airplane will perform as though it were at an even higher altitude. On a hot summer day in Colorado, this so called "density altitude" can get as high as 8,000 feet at our airport. This means the airplane will perform as though it were at 8,000 feet above sea level before even leaving the ground! Not to worry though... our fleet of aircraft was specifically chosen to perform at these altitudes.
